Wayne Liu

“Born in 1979 in Taiwan, I speak both mandarin Chinese and English. I stayed with grandparents until 5 before living with parents in Texas and NJ. I went back to Taiwan 6 yrs later and lived in school dormitory till graduation. I have been residing in NYC since 1999. I am currently editing and printing new photos from my recent 2nd trip in China, part of an ongoing exploration titled “China, You are a Luck Star.”
Shooting in China is for me a sort of reconstruction of my childhood memories. The first five years of my life, 1979–1984, I grew up in Taiwan with paternal grandparents, and what I vaguely remember of those sights and smell, contemporary China seems to fulfill for me as a substitute. Those years of my parent‘s absence may have had an effect that hence I‘m often searching for a sense of solitude amidst whatever I may be photographing.
