The Camera Club of New York pays tribute to former club president Jerry Sheik, who passed away on June 1. Gregarious and warm-hearted, Jerry personified the club's spirit of community and commitment to advancing the art and practice of photography.
Jerry was a longtime member of the Camera Club and was its president from 1995 to 1997. In addition, he served on the exhibitions committee and taught a number of classes, including studio lighting, and he was instrumental in starting the Club's lecture series and portfolio review roundtables.
Jerry was a successful portrait photographer, with many clients in the corporate and entertainment worlds, as well as individual commissions. His work appeared regularly in business magazines as well as newspapers. Many of his images appeared in gallery exhibitions and solo shows at the Cornelia Street Cafe, including images from an ongoing series on circuses, with whom he traveled both in the U.S. and abroad. In a club newsletter he was quoted as saying that his choice of subject allowed him to fulfill a childhood dream to "run away and join the circus." His circus images amply demonstrate that his love of connecting with people through pictures was boundless.
Jerry will be missed by all who joined him in exploring the world through the eye of a camera.
