Lisa Elmaleh is a large format photographer whose current work is an exploration of the diminishing landscape of the Everglades. Elmaleh hopes to preserve an essence of the Everglades, a land that has been on the verge of ruin due to overdevelopment. As a native of South Florida, the Everglades were an essential part of her personal history. Elmaleh photographs using the wet collodion process, a nineteenth century process requiring the image be exposed and developed on site. For this process, Elmaleh built a portable darkroom in the trunk of her car. The collodion process renders light slowly and shows evidence of the passing of time, a quality which is essential to her work. Elmaleh received the Silas Rhodes scholarship to attend the School of Visual Arts, and obtained a BFA with honors. Elmaleh is a recipient of the Tierney Fellowship, the 2008 Camera Club of New York Darkroom Residency, and the Goldwell Artist Residency (Beatty, NV). She has been included in various group shows such as the 2008 New York Photofest (Powerhouse) and Landscape:Voyage (KMR Arts).
