Ellen Wallenstein was born and raised in New York City and attended public schools. She earned a BA in Art History from SUNY Stony Brook and a MFA in Photography from Pratt Institute.

Her work is in public and private collections, and has been shown in many national and international exhibitions. (Her first solo show in New York was at the Camera Club, in 1989.)

Wallenstein currently teaches Photography and Book Arts at the School of Visual Arts and Pratt Institute. In 2008 she was awarded a NYFA Fellowship in Photography.

Other professional experiences include being an Artist–in Residence in a hospital, a Writer, a Photo Archivist, a Curator, and a Tarot Card Reader.
